The pretty Aster is September’s Birth Flower

Just in time for Summer’s transition to Autumn, the birth flower for September is the pretty Aster! According to FTD.com, Asters represent love and faith, with purple asters symbolizing wisdom and royalty, and red asters conveying undying devotion.

I’ve also used September’s beautiful Peridot birthstone as inspiration for the soft color wash on this month’s printable.

History of Birth Flowers

Birth flowers have an interesting history. For instance, the earliest reference to the language of flowers is by the poet Christopher Smart, who first mentioned a language of flowers in Jubilate Agno, circa 1759-63. However, Mary Wortley, Lady Montagu, through her memoirs, introduced 18th century western culture to the concept of flowers assigned to each birth month.

Additionally, Victorians expressed feelings not considered proper to voice aloud by sharing ‘talking bouquets’. Be sure to check out the links below if you’re interested in the history and full lists of flowers. I hope you’ll enjoy this fun series and your pretty September Aster birth flower printable!
