Winter Hygge and a ‘Good to be Home’ printable
Do you feel a let down after the holidays? I’m relieved to be past all the hustle and bustle, but it feels like the long, cold nights and frosty days stretch endlessly ahead. For me, it can lead to a case of the blues. And because there’s a while yet until my region sees springtime, I think it’s especially useful to learn from the wisdom of other cultures whose winters are even more prolonged than those here in the Rockies.
Let’s create some Hygge
Denmark’s cold season is long and brutal, with only seven hours of daylight during the depths of winter. The idea of Hygge was formed to psychologically help people get through the long winters. The concept can be described as a feeling of coziness, comfort, friendship, laughter and homemade food and drinks. And though it’s possible to achieve the feeling of Hygge any time of year, it’s usually associated with the colder seasons because of it’s ability to uplift spirits during dark, long winter months.
I’ve written about Hygge (pronounced Heu-gah) before, but I think this time of year warrants a little extra attention. Hygge is all about creating peaceful, cozy surroundings that fill you with the feeling of contentment. So, let’s look at a few simple ways you can bring Hygge into your home this season.
Warm lighting
In order to achieve a great sense of Hygge, be sure to light some candles, have a fire, or set up string lights.
Cozy blankets and soft textures
Now’s the time to pull out all those soft, fluffy blankets and have them ready on the couch or chairs and by the windows, so that you can cuddle up with your favorite book and relax.
Home cooking and baking
Comfort foods like your favorite soup or stew, savory flatbreads, cookies, or apple pie will fill the air with soul-warming scents, making your home feel cozy and cared for.
You get the idea
The essence of Hygge can be described as the warm and homey feeling you get from sitting by a fire with a bowl of homemade soup on a cold day, curling up in a blanket to read your favorite book, or sharing a laugh with good friends. I hope you’ll try crafting a little Hygge to help you get through the winter. And to help cozy up your Hygge-inspired space, I’ve created a pretty ‘Good to be Home’ printable!
