The health benefits of Witch Hazel
I know the mix of posts here on my blog is pretty eclectic. Along with seasonal printables, motivational, and wellness posts, I like to write about herbs because I really enjoy learning more about them. However, I’ll admit I almost overlooked witch hazel. It’s such a common staple that it’s often taken for granted. One of the few herbs approved by the FDA as an over the counter topical remedy, it can help with everything from minor skin issues to reducing inflammation and swelling, and is commonly used in commercial cosmetics and skin treatments. If using natural herbs for holistic or homeopathic care interests you, witch hazel is a time-tested and often recommended remedy. Read on to learn more about this natural herbal treatment and how it can help you.
Eliminates bacteria
Applying witch hazel to a small scrape or cut can eliminate bacteria and prevent infection. Take care not to irritate the wound, and continue to apply daily as the wound heals.
Treats difficult skin rashes
Witch hazel is an excellent treatment for eczema or psoriasis, and can help to repair skin. When used on a sunburn, studies have shown it prevents skin damage. Adding a small amount to your bathwater will also soothe itchy skin. If your skin is extra sensitive, test first on a small area.
Reduces oiliness on skin
Oily skin can benefit from using witch hazel lotion. Collected from the shrub’s leaves and flowers, the essential oil is used in astringent lotions. Apply with a cotton ball to clear the excess sebum that can cause acne. Be sure to avoid eyes, nose, or mouth.
Stops swelling and discoloration from bruises
Cover a damp cloth with witch hazel and place the poultice on the bruise several times a day to stop the discoloration or swelling from bruises.
Keep in mind
As mentioned above, don’t get in your eyes, nose, or mouth. And, although rare, allergic reactions can happen. Be sure to test your skin first for sensitivity. Also remember that you can also use witch hazel with other natural remedies, like aloe vera, coconut oil, and other herbs or essential oils.
Many Health Benefits
Witch hazel offers so many benefits. It can help with everything from skin issues to reducing inflammation and swelling. This time-tested remedy will make an excellent addition to your natural medicine cabinet.
