It’s time for the the newest birth flower printable in my series! The bright Poppy is the birth flower for the month of August. When given using the language of flowers, a red poppy expresses pleasure and a yellow poppy conveys wishes for success and wealth.

August Birthstone and color

For the color wash on this month’s printable, I used August’s warm Carnelian birthstone as inspiration.

History of Birth Flowers

Birth flowers have an interesting history. The earliest reference to the language of flowers is by the poet Christopher Smart, who first mentioned a language of flowers in Jubilate Agno, circa 1759-63. However, Mary Wortley, Lady Montagu, through her memoirs, introduced 18th century western culture to the concept of flowers assigned to each birth month.
