Radiant Ruby is July’s Birthstone – with free printable
Radiant July is here
I always think of July as summer party time. Concerts, festivals, vacations, and more are on the docket for this high summer month. It’s a month of fireworks, festivals, glowing sunrises and sunsets, and, for us in the northern hemisphere, the shimmering heat of the season. For all these reasons and more, the radiant ruby is the perfect birthstone for this vibrant month.
July Rubies
Rubies get their red color from the presence of chromium. Additionally, a ruby’s value is determined by the 4 Cs (color, cut, clarity, and carat), with the blood red, or pigeon’s blood red being the most valued. Interestingly, all rubies will fluoresce in ultra violet light, with some shining so bright they’re said to contain an inner fire.
Ruby Birthstones
Folklore stated that Rubies held protective powers, and could help to control anger and evil thoughts, as well as resolve disputes. The ancient Burmese believed that a ruby physically embedded in the flesh would render the wearer invincible. People also believed that a ruby or other red stone could remedy inflammation and bleeding. Finally, rubies are traditionally given as a 15th anniversary gift.
History of Birthstones
In recent years, Birthstones have seen a resurgence in popularity. The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the book of Exodus. However, the society now known as Jewelers of America chose the modern birthstones we know today, with updates to the list in 1935. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and is the one I’ve chosen for this series.
