Pretty Peridot is the birthstone for August – with free printable
August Birthstone
Part of the reason I think it’s fun to do new projects is for the opportunity to learn new things, and the birthstone for August is a good example. I’ll admit I didn’t know much about Peridot gemstones when I started this series. I’ve enjoyed learning more about birthstones, and about this one in particular. The beautiful green of peridot gems is a unique shade for stones and a cool counterpoint to the heat of August.
August Peridot
Peridots are part of the olivine group of minerals, and come in a wide range of greens. Depending on the amount of iron present in the stone, they can range from almost emerald to olive green, or even yellow, like the rare gems found in meteorites.
Peridot Birthstones
Along with many other gemstones, Peridots were believed to hold protective powers. Folklore stated that Peridot could drive away fear and nightmares. And because of its ability to reflect a green glow, even at night, pirates believed that a peridot would glow when near treasure.
Peridot Energy
Energetically, Peridot is associated with happiness and cleansing negative emotions. People use this stone’s energy to enhance serenity and mental clarity.
History of Birthstones
In recent years, Birthstones have seen a resurgence in popularity. The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the book of Exodus. However, the society now known as Jewelers of America chose the modern birthstones we know today, with updates to the list in 1935. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and is the one I’ve chosen for this series.
