March’s birthstone is the gorgeous Aquamarine – with free printable
March has arrived
March is finally here! To me, the first couple months of the year feel much longer than the actual days of January and February. Once I get through the holiday hangover, it feels like an endless stretch, as if I’m in a holding pattern until the weather breaks. But finally, the month that takes us from winter to spring has arrived. And maybe because this is the month of new birth and renewal, March’s pretty Aquamarine Birthstone feels extra special.
March Aquamarine
Aquamarines are beryl gemstones, and they vary in shade and intensity. Aquamarines are similar in color to fluorite, however, they have a shiny, glassy finish. And while pure beryl stones are clear, the blue color in Aquamarines come from the presence of iron in the stone. The color of the stones can be (and often are) enhanced with a heat treatment.
Aquamarine Birthstones
Ancient Greeks believed that Poseidon created Aquamarines from seawater. Both the Greeks and Romans believed the stone had the power to calm rough seas, and mariners carried them for protection. They’re associated with tranquility and thought to help aid a harmonious marriage and good relationships. Aquamarines are a popular gift for March birthdays, make a symbolic gift for a seafaring voyage, and are also a traditional gift for a 19th wedding anniversary.
History of Birthstones
Birthstones have risen in popularity in recent years. The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the book of Exodus. However, the modern birthstones we know today were chosen in 1912 by what is now known as the Jewelers of America, with updates to the list in 1935. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and is the one I’ve chosen for this series.
