Make Yourself a Priority! Monthly Motivation includes printable

You may be very good at taking care of others but how good are you at taking care of yourself? Self-care means taking the time to manage our own physical, mental, and emotional wellness. The old adage “You can’t pour from an empty cup” is absolutely true, and practicing self-care helps us to fill that cup, enabling us to be present for others in the ways we truly want to be. So for this month’s motivation, I’m sharing a little insight into why you really do need to make yourself a priority. Read on for some simple ways to incorporate self-care into your life.

Delegate when necessary

Proper self-care enables you to better manage your stress, so some tell-tale signs that you’re not taking care of yourself may include feelings of being stressed or burned out, as well as feeling run down and sick. Another sign you’re not practicing self-care is if you rarely allow others to do something for you. Letting someone else take the reins while you focus on other tasks or take a break is also self-care, and gives you the opportunity to take care of yourself.

Know when to say no

We all have limits, and taking on too much for too long can wear you down. Over time, having too much on your plate robs you of your ability to be creative and effective. Practicing self-care requires you to set clear boundaries with others who may or may not have your best interests at heart.

Schedule self-care

Self-care doesn’t just happen spontaneously. You’ll want to schedule the time and actively commit to seeing your plans through. You may also have to make others aware of your plans to ensure they don’t put their needs ahead of yours.

Get your rest

Don’t underestimate the necessity of recharging your body. Sleep, rest, relaxation, and meditation can all help restore and replenish your body and spirit. Additionally, it helps your mind stay sharp and makes it easier to keep a healthy mood and outlook on life.

Find fitness

If you don’t enjoy exercise, look for ways to naturally incorporate some form of fitness into your day. Challenge yourself to find something you enjoy doing, whether it’s going for walks, swimming, tai chi, kickboxing, dancing around your home solo or finding a Zumba class. Self-care isn’t just about getting adequate rest, taking a day off or keeping your doctor’s appointments. It’s also about helping your body to stay fit.

Socialize with others

With so many obligations, incorporating friends and family into our busy schedule can seem impossible. But healthy relationships are essential for our emotional and physical well-being, so self-care can also be about tending to relationships that make us feel good. Look for ways to nurture your relationships, even if it means becoming the organizer of those get-togethers.

Make yourself a priority

Self care doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Pick one area and make small adjustments. I think you’ll find even small changes can create big improvements to your quality of life. You deserve to make yourself a priority!
