What is farm-to-table?

The harvest is on, and chances are good that you’ll find your favorite fruits and veggies fresh and ready to enjoy right now. In recent posts, I’ve talked about finding locally grown, fresh produce, as well as the advantages of attending your local Farmer’s Market. All this local goodness is part of the farm-to-table movement. So what does farm-to-table actually mean? It means you’re choosing and eating produce, eggs, milk, and meat from local farms instead of national supermarket chains. Buying locally provides lots of benefits for your family, your health, and your local community. Read on to learn just a few of the main benefits of the farm-to-table movement.

It helps your local community

When buying your produce, milk, eggs, and meat from local farmers and ranchers, you’re spending your food dollars locally and helping local growers instead of buying from corporations across the state or even on the other side of the country. These small farmers provide a service to the community and count on your help and participation. You can either buy from them directly, or go through a farmer’s market or CSA. Your food is healthier

With the farm-to-table movement, you’re also eating healthier. Locally grown fruits and vegetables aren’t sprayed with chemicals to maintain freshness on a long trip across the country. Instead, they’re picked when ripe and at their peak, resulting in superior taste. And because fresh produce starts to lose nutrients within 24 hours of harvesting, locally grown food offers better nutrition, which means better health for you.

Proper animal welfare

Local farms aren’t mass producing food. Animals on small farms are often grass-fed and allowed to roam freely around the farm, which is better for the animal, and the environment. Additionally, livestock is less likely to be pumped full of hormones just to get more out of them. And if you have a question about what the animals were fed, your local farmer is much more accessible and more likely to share the information with you.

Better for the environment

There are a few different ways farm-to-table helps the local environment. First, delivery trucks aren’t using extra fuel and releasing excess emissions during transport. Locally grown food doesn’t require nearly as much packaging (if any) before it gets to your door. And, as mentioned above, your food isn’t being sprayed with chemicals to keep the produce from spoiling on the long trip to your local supermarket. In many instances you can visit the farm yourself to pick up your produce and eggs, or have it delivered through CSA, who won’t need to drive as far to get it to you.

The farm-to-table movement gives you the opportunity to buy your produce, eggs, milk, and meat from local growers and farmers, keeping your food dollars within your community. Since they’re not mass producing food, small farmers tend to treat their animals better and produce a higher quality product. Buying locally allows you to purchase fresh food without unnecessary additives, chemicals, or packaging, creating a healthier diet for you and your family, as well as a better environment.
