Seasonal Color

In my region, the cold season lasts almost 5 months, with much of that time covered in snow. I’m sure I’m no different than other gardeners when I say I miss being in my garden and around the beautiful blooms. However, as other plants are bedding down to sleep, beautiful poinsettias arrive to spread their colorful cheer for the season.

For me, the variety of poinsettias is part of their charm. Red, cream, pink, and even variegated plants are among the choices available. So, whether you want to make a bold statement with traditional red or another single shade, or you like the option of using multiple colors, poinsettias are a beautiful way to add some seasonal sparkle.

I love Poinsettias

Poinsettia plants are part of the Euphorbia family and native to Mexico. What we think of as the flower are the leaves responding to the shorter days of winter by changing color. Poinsettias enjoy bright light and do best in cooler temperatures, typically 60-75 degrees, but will suffer damage if exposed to temps below 50. Avoid drafts and sources of warm air like fireplaces or heating ducts since it will dry them out. And since homes typically run warm, one trick I learned is to water with ice cubes (avoid the stems).  As the cubes melt, it lowers the temperature and keep the plants cool and moist.

Share the beauty of Poinsettias

Here in the U.S., National Poinsettia Day is celebrated each year on December 12th. But these pretty plants are a wonderful way to spread cheer throughout the Holiday season, from Thanksgiving through to the New Year.
