Face down your fears! Includes a free ‘Be Fearless’ Monthly Motivation printable
Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.
~ Babe Ruth
You might not realize it, but deep down everyone is afraid. However, the choice isn’t between feeling fear or not feeling fear. Instead, our choice is to control or to be controlled by our fears. I’m the same as everyone else. I’ve also faced decisions that have filled me with dread and fear, and I always appreciate learning about techniques that can help. So, for this month’s motivation let’s take a look at how we can work through our fears and face our challenges with courage and joy.
Try fear setting
The first step towards reaching our goals is to muster up the courage that makes everything else possible. And one tool for doing this is ‘fear setting’. Fear setting is an idea made popular by Tim Ferriss in his book ‘The Four Hour Workweek’. However, the idea really takes its cues from a concept known as ‘thought challenging’.
For most of us, our fears come from our beliefs about what could go wrong or events that might happen. For instance, we might worry that if we leave our current job to start a new business, we’ll end up with nothing to fall back on. These fears are often what prevent us from taking risks and living to our full potential.
Write it down
Fear setting is about taking these beliefs and making them less scary. You do this by writing your fears down and assessing how likely they are to happen. What’s more, you’ll also come up with contingency plans for how you’d cope if they should ever happen.
So for instance, if you’re worried you might end up losing your job if you take time off, with fear setting you’d think through how you might cope. Would you be destitute? Would you find another job? Do you have enough in savings to survive for a few weeks? Use fear setting and your fears won’t seem so big. Seeing those fears spelled out on paper also gives you the opportunity to work through problems in advance and to generate alternate solutions.
You’re not alone
You also want to remember you’re not alone. No one said you have to hide your fear or overcome it all by yourself. Build a support network of family, friends, and colleagues who’ll have your back and cheer you on. Get professional advice from a coach or mentor, or buddy up with a friendly colleague. And if you have anxiety issues that seem overwhelming, get professional help. Be kind to yourself and get whatever support you need.
Face your fears
Face down your fears! Don’t look back on your life with regret. No matter what your fears are, you can gain the courage to try new things and live your life to it’s fullest potential. And of course I’ve created a pretty printable to help you remember to be fearless and live life on your own terms!
