Elegant Emerald is May’s Birthstone! With printable
May is here
May has arrived! This beautiful, full-blown spring month is when everything green and growing is coming into its own, so it feels right that the birthstone for May is the elegant green Emerald.
May Emeralds
Emeralds are a beryl gemstone, and, along with diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, are considered one of the big four gems. Traces of chromium are what give Emeralds their rich green color. Hues can vary from yellow-green to blue-green, however, only those stones with a deep green are called Emeralds. Lighter toned gems are classified as green beryl.
Emerald Birthstones
Called the jewel of kings, Emeralds endowed the wearer with power and riches. And with its verdant green color, Emeralds have long symbolized hope, fertility, and rebirth. Also employed to cut through spells and illusions, the belief was that wearing an emerald sharpened wit and improved memory. Finally, Emeralds make a beautiful and traditional gift for a 55th wedding anniversary.
History of Birthstones
Birthstones have risen in popularity in recent years. The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the book of Exodus. However, the modern birthstones we know today were chosen in 1912 by what is now called the Jewelers of America, with updates to the list in 1935. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and is the one I’ve chosen for this series.
