December Tanzanite is the final birthstone of the year – with free printable

December’s choice

I had a few stones to choose from for December’s birthstone. Turquoise and Zircon are also options for December, but I think Tanzanites are beautiful and unusual, so that’s the stone I chose to feature.

December Tanzanite

Called the stone of transformation, Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 in the Simanjiro District of Tanzania. Tiffany & Co. renamed the stone, both to feature its place of origin and for marketing appeal.

Tanzanite Birthstones

Tanzanite is the newest gemstone to be added to the list of birthstones. A type of zoisite, Tanzanite displays brown veil-like patches in its raw state. Heating eliminates the brown color and reveals the characteristic blue to violet coloring, which changes depending on the viewing angle. Considered rare, most Tanzanites on the market are actually heated Corundum or synthetic spinel.

History of Birthstones

In recent years, Birthstones have seen a resurgence in popularity. The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the book of Exodus. However, the society now known as Jewelers of America chose the modern birthstones we know today, with updates to the list in 1935, and Tanzanite added in 2002. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and the one I’ve chosen for this series.
