Come home to nature! 3 ways to a deeper connection and bonus printable
Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.
~ Gary Snyder
Nature is home
Ever notice when things get overwhelming how we’re drawn to the beauty of nature? As it turns out, science is confirming that spending more time outdoors translates to improved mental and physical health. In a previous post, I talked about how connecting to nature can help us to de-stress and provide a break from our busy world, and in this post I want to share a few ways you can enjoy an even deeper connection to Mother Nature.
Breath Walking
Breath walking may may sound new to you, but the concept is simply to sync your breath with your pace as you walk. Step out into nature with no electronics. Turn off the music and phones and just walk. Concentrate on your breath as you move and work to calm it. Breathe in for four strides, then out through your nostrils for four strides. Notice the sounds of nature around you, and let go of the stress of the day through your breathing. You’ll find yourself healthier and happier at the end of the walk and, as you continue the practice, you may find yourself more adapted to handling your daily stress as well.

Forest Bathing
If you crave even more connection with nature, try the Japanese practice shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. Forest bathing is the name given to spending a couple of hours in a natural environment, using all of your senses. Wander through a forested area. Drink in the sights, sounds, smells, and textures. Crush leaves in your hand or feel the rough bark of a tree. Smell the sap or wiggle your toes in the dirt. Listen to the sound of water, or the wind. Watch the birds and feel the breeze in your hair. Studies show that spending two hours gently exploring a natural environment can produce real physical benefits, including reduced heart rate, decreased anxiety and depression, and improved mood and energy levels.
Earthing aka Grounding
Grounding is the concept of putting your bare feet into direct contact with the earth. There are multiple benefits to grounding, including reduced anxiety and stress, and it’s been shown to help relieve chronic pain and inflammation. Besides providing stress relief, there’s scientific evidence that we actually make a positive ground with the earth. You’ll come in contact with free electrons when you touch the earth with your bare feet, which can help break down free radicals in your body. You’re getting healing energy directly from the earth’s surface, which is why it’s important to touch actual earth, whether it’s dirt, grass, sand, or even in water like a river, lake, or the ocean.
This one is simple to do. Just take off your shoes and socks, and stand with your feet directly in contact with the earth. If you’re so inclined, you can visualize your stress exiting through the soles of your feet. Drain away the negative thoughts and let healthful, positive energy come back to you. Doing this on a regular basis, daily if possible, will do wonders for your mental and physical health.
Come home to nature
While we may not always have control over what happens in life, we can do our best to prepare for the challenges that come our way. The next time you feel as if your life is running amok, take a break and come home to nature. You’ll find your stress levels will be lower, your calm restored, and your overall wellbeing improved.
And finally, because a visual cue or affirmation can help us remember to care for ourselves, I’ve created a pretty printable to remind you that forging a deeper connection with nature can help you to be your best, at every age!
