5 Ways Coffee Is Good For You
It’s easy to say that coffee is the world’s favorite beverage. Grown in countries all over the world, our favorite cuppa comes in endless varieties, flavors, and strengths. And, guess what? Research shows that it’s actually good for you! Read on to learn 5 reasons you can feel good about starting every day with a cup of joe.
#1 Provides Antioxidants
Most Americans get more antioxidants from coffee than they do from the food they eat. According to numerous studies, nothing comes close to the antioxidants found in coffee. Fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants, however, your body absorbs more antioxidants from coffee, so drink up!
#2 Good for Your Liver
Coffee’s protective benefits help guard against alcohol-related cirrhosis, and other studies have shown that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease can also be prevented by drinking coffee. Those who consume a cup of coffee are less likely to end up hospitalized, or dying, from cirrhosis of the liver, brought on by drinking too much alcohol.
#3 Keeps Your Brain Active and Healthy Longer
Researchers at the University of South Florida found that high levels of caffeine could actually delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. The study states that drinking coffee on a regular basis can reduce the risk of developing this debilitating disease by up to 4 years.
#4 Helps You Feel Happier
If you’re feeling down, a cup of coffee may be just what you need. A study by the National Institute of Health found individuals who drink coffee were less likely to suffer from depression than those who avoided drinking coffee.
#5 Makes You Smarter
According to some reports, coffee does much more than give you an energy boost. It can also make you more intelligent. According to an article on PopularScience.com, drinking coffee causes your brain to work more efficiently. The result? A smarter you!
How Much is Too Much?
Portion control is important to reap the benefits of the bean without its negative effects. The Mayo Clinic says that adults can safely enjoy up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine daily. This amounts to about four cups of your average brew. Keep in mind that caffeine content varies. For example, a 6-ounce cup from Starbucks can have 200 mg more of caffeine than a cup served at Dunkin Donuts.

The evidence is in and now you know. Go ahead and have a cup of joe! It really is good for you!
