Fun Ways to Use Edible Flowers

My blog isn’t a cooking blog, but if you’ve been here before you know I love flowers, so the idea of using flowers in food is a fun twist to me. Previously I’ve posted about easy to grow edible flowers, and in this post, I share a few ideas for different ways to use those pretty edibles.

Fun Ways to Use Edible Flowers

Edible flowers can be used in a variety of recipes, from salads to soups and stews. But their pretty appearance and bright colors can also help you create a more exotic-looking dish, or even just add a vibrant pop of color. Read on for a few ideas for using your edible flowers.

Garnishes

This one is so simple and one of the easiest ways to use your edible flowers. A flower garnish can really dress up your salads, or platters of cheese or fruit. They’re beautiful on cakes, as cupcake toppers, or pressed into cookies. Use a variety of blossoms to create gorgeous cupcake trays or cookie platters.

Ice Cubes

Place a flower or two in each compartment of an ice cube tray. Add water and freeze. Add to clear drinks or as a float in punch bowls. Depending on what flowers you choose, you can add a zing of lemon, the taste of cucumber, and more.

Popsicles

Add flower petals to your popsicle containers, fill with a favorite liquid (lemonade is always a favorite!), add the stick and freeze. You can have a colorful variety of popsicles filled with blossoms and interesting tastes like lavender, lemon mint or hibiscus.

Lollipops

Along the same lines, you can make your own lollipops with sugar syrup and sticks. Use a single blossom per sucker, then dazzle with different shapes and colors.

Candied Petals

Candied violets have been used for centuries, both as a sweet treat and as an elegant way to decorate cakes. Create your own for guests or to give as gifts.

Jellies

Clear gelatin and some sugar can be the beginning of brightly-colored jellied candies. Pour the prepared gelatin into a tray and arrange the blossoms in the liquid. Chill well, then cut into small squares. To keep the jellies from sticking together, just toss with powdered sugar.

Yogurt Parfaits

Place flower petals between layers of yogurt, and granola or nuts, for a light breakfast or refreshing dessert.

Teas

The most basic herbal tea can be made with fresh or dried chamomile flowers. It’s pretty, and good for the digestion. Additionally, edible flowers like rose hip and hibiscus are the basis for many commercial herbal teas on the market, so have some fun and experiment with different blends.
