Celebrate Halloween with a free Black Cat Society printable

When witches go riding and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
’tis near Halloween!

Halloween is here

‘Tis Halloween, and this year I’m paying homage to one of the holiday classics, the black cat. Known as the witches familiar, black cats are an iconic symbol of this spooky holiday, and their silhouette is as recognizable as a witch’s hat or broom.

Historically, black cats gained a bad reputation in Western Europe, especially in the middle ages. Early Christian authorities associated cats with the local pagan healers, and cast anyone not subservient to them as wicked. But not all cultures see black cats as bad luck. Ancient Egyptians considered cats an incarnation of their cat-goddess, Bastet, and History.com reports that cats represent prosperity in both Japan and Scotland.

Forever Black Cat Society

While black cats are typically associated with Halloween and witches, I have more personal reasons for my choice this year. I’ve had a few black cats throughout my life (they seem to find their way to me), but specifically, for the last 15 years I had a loving companion that happened to be a black kitty. She was the least scary black cat you could hope to find, and yet, as a little black void, she could be a bit spooky. One of her favorite places to lie was on a black plush throw, where she’d curl up, close her eyes, and … disappear. You could say she was just sleeping, but I’d swear there were times when she just wasn’t there. She was a great bird hunter and mouser, an absolute ninja when it came to grasshoppers, and she crossed the rainbow bridge last December. I miss her every day! So in memoriam, I’m dedicating this Black Cat Society printable to my Java. I’ll forever be a member of the Black Cat Society.
