Celebrate Earth Day with a free ‘Bee the Change’ printable!
Celebrating Earth Day
Spring has sprung, and gardening ideas and discussions are popping up everywhere. Of course I’m interested in allll the gardening tips and tricks, but this year I thought I’d focus on everyone’s favorite little pollinator. And what better time to talk about bees than Earth Day? Earth Day reminds us of our responsibility to protect and preserve our planet’s ecosystems. And, as pollinators to so many plants, bees are essential to the health of those ecosystems. We have the power to safeguard these tiny yet mighty creatures, and each of us can make a difference.
We can be the change
Since 1970, Earth day has raised awareness about the environment and sustainable farming practices. It reminds us that we can all take proactive steps towards conservation and be part of the solution, as individuals and in our communities and government. From reducing carbon emissions to preserving and promoting biodiversity, Earth Day inspires us all to safeguard our planet for future generations. On Earth day and beyond, I’ve listed a few simple ways we can all contribute to bee conservation.
Raise awareness
Spread the word about the threats bees face and how important they are to our ecosystem. From the Varroa mite to colony collapse disorder, bee populations are in decline. You can’t change what you don’t know about, so raising awareness helps to bring about needed change.
Plant bee-friendly gardens
Grow a variety of native flowering plants that provide food and habitat for bees. So many plants provide nutrients for bees, and a wider variety means a healthier bee population.
Avoid pesticides
Opt for organic farming practices when possible. Companion planting and other organic practices are less harmful to bees and other beneficial insects, as well as providing a healthier harvest for you.
Support Beekeepers
Buy local honey and support local beekeepers. Buying local honey also provides an extra bonus, since eating food grown local to your area offers you more nutrients than food shipped to your region.
We are all connected
Let’s remember how we’re all connected and the critical role bees play in sustaining our food production and ecosystem. By taking action to protect bees and their habitats, we’re nurturing a healthier planet for future generations. We can ensure a brighter future for bees and all living beings. Happy Earth Day!
