Carnation is January’s birth flower – new series includes printable!
New Birth Flower Series
If you’ve visited before, you know I have a thing for flowers and floral printables. In the past, I’ve created other monthly printables with seasonal florals, so I’m excited to start a new series of monthly printables featuring birth flowers.
New design for series
As a designer, I’m always watching new trends. Minimalist and abstract artwork has become popular, and it’s fun to see what’s available. I’m not sure this series will qualify as truly minimalist, but I was so inspired by the simplicity of this artwork, and I was happy that the bundle included all the monthly birth flowers to play with. And, I especially love that I can start the series with my daughter’s birth month, and one of my momma’s favorite flowers, the Carnation.
History of Birth Flowers
During the Victorian era, flowers were symbolic and floral bouquets carried a language of their own. Assigning flowers to months of birth was introduced in the early 18th century by Mary Wortley, Lady Montagu. In the years since, the English and American varieties of monthly flowers has sometimes differed, so I think it might be fun to use the American designation when it’s different from the English. Not completely sure yet and I don’t really have any rules for this, I’m just winging it. 🙂
January’s Flower is the Pretty Carnation
Carnations symbolize love, fascination, and distinction. Carnations also go by the name Gillyflowers, and come in shades of pink to red and purple.
