Beautiful Amethyst is February’s birthstone – with free printable
February is here
February is here! In our house February is a birthday month, but more importantly, February is the last full month of winter. The official beginning of spring will arrive in six weeks or so, but for now I’m doing my best to stay cozy and keep a positive attitude. When I think of think of this month, it radiates with a purple aura, which is, I’m sure, because of this month’s Birthstone.
February Amethyst
February’s birthstone is the beautiful Amethyst. Deep purple is the shade of royalty, and also carries a rich history of symbolism. As far back as the Egyptians, amethysts were crafted into amulets for both prayer and protection. These beautiful crystals have traditionally symbolized wisdom and a pure spirit, and many considered them a symbol of peace. The ancient Greeks would cover their goblets in Amethysts to protect against drunkenness, and healers from many cultures believed the stones could heal wounds. Amethysts were also thought to assist with soothing dreams by aligning the dreamer with the Divine.
Amethyst Birthstones
Birthstones were popular during the Victorian era, but fell out of fashion after the 1800s. However, in recent years birthstones have seen a resurgence in popularity. Amethysts make a popular gift for a February birthday. And while Amethysts come in a wide range of colors from palest violet to deep purple, the deeper colors are generally more sought after.
History of Birthstones
The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the Bible’s book of Exodus. However, today’s modern birthstones were chosen in 1912 by what’s now called the Jewelers of America, with updates to the list in 1935. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and is the one I’ve chosen for this series.
