April’s Birthstone is the dazzling Diamond! Includes free printable

April is here

April has arrived, and the birthstone for this month is the diamond. This dazzling gemstone has such a fabled history it was a challenge to distill down the information into just a few paragraphs. Some diamonds are so famous (and sometimes infamous) they come with their own names. From the Akbar Shah, to the Hope, and Esperanza diamonds, these stones are the stuff of legend and lore.

While most diamonds are colorless and prized for their brilliance, you’ll also find them in a wide range of colors. Jewelers grade diamonds with a system known as “the four C’s”: carat, color, clarity, and cut. And because they’re the hardest known natural material, diamonds are also used for industrial cutting purposes.

Diamond Birthstones

One of the best known and romanticized gemstones, diamonds symbolize eternal love and strength. Thought to help aid balance and mental clarity,  the ancients believed holding a diamond close would cleanse the body of toxins. With records of use dating back at least to 3000 BC, diamonds came exclusively from India until discovered in Brazil in the 18th century. Today, diamonds are mined mostly in South Africa, Botswana, and Russia. In addition to April’s birthstone, we think of diamonds for engagement and wedding rings. However, they’re also a traditional gift to commemorate 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.

History of Birthstones

The history of birthstones can be traced back to the first century, with descriptions found in the book of Exodus. However, the modern birthstones we use today were chosen in 1912 by what is now called the Jewelers of America. The list was updated in 1935, with additions to the list added in 2002 and 2013. The U.S. list is very similar to the UK list and is the one I’ve chosen for this series.
