5 Ways Kindness Breeds Success

You may have heard the saying “nice guys finish last.” People often believe that being kind means you’re weak and can be easily taken advantage of. But is this really true? We may be skeptical of others who are kind to us and may think they have an ulterior motive. But really, kindness does not equal weakness. On the contrary, it takes a great amount of strength to be kind to someone who thinks differently or is slowing you down in some way. People who perform regular acts of kindness are often more successful, have more friends, and are more well liked than those who don’t.

Luis Benitez, who has summitted the Seven Summits 32 times, says that kindness and compassion are essential to overcoming physical and mental challenges. He often encounters terrible challenges during his climbs. He gives as an example how you may see someone limping on the day you need to reach the next camp. Rather than ignore their pain, you take the time to bandage their feet, enabling them to keep up with you. This is not just being unselfish. If a member of the party couldn’t hike, the entire group may have to return to the start.

An act of kindness creates good feelings for you and your recipient, but taking the time to help someone is more than altruism. It can benefit you in other ways as well. Read on for 5 ways being kind to others will pay dividends to you.

How kindness helps you succeed:

  • Kindness increases confidence. Studies show that that an act of kindness increases your own self-worth.
  • People remember you when you are kind and willing to help others. Your behavior sets you apart from others.
  • Kindness creates a ripple effect and is contagious. One person’s kindness spreads to others, who in turn act with kindness.
  • Kindness helps increase employee performance. Being kind to others makes them happier which in turn makes them more productive.
  • Being kind bridges gaps between people. It can reach across barriers in language, gender, locality, religion and anything else that causes people to miscommunicate.
