4 Surprising Health Benefits of Coffee
Ah, nothing beats the sweet smell and taste of coffee in the morning. More coffee is consumed daily than any other beverage in the world. And while some people drink coffee as a pick me up or because they love the taste, it actually offers some very real health benefits.
In a previous post, I talked about 5 healthy reasons you might want to have a cup of joe. But there’s even more to that cup of coffee than you might think. Read on to learn 4 surprising health benefits of your daily cup of coffee.
Coffee is Antibacterial
Coffee, decaf and regular, has antibacterial properties. Studies have shown that coffee is effective against S. mutant, the bacteria that results in tooth decay, as well as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis.
Coffee Improves Your Cardiovascular Health
Although drinking too much coffee is not a good idea, drinking 3-5 cups per day can actually improve the health of your heart.
Coffee Is Rich In Antioxidants
Antioxidants stop or reduce the damage to your body’s cells and are your body’s first line of defense against rogue free radicals. Those free radicals cause oxidation and inflammation, resulting in premature aging and disease. Coffee contains more antioxidants than many fruits, including oranges and grapes.
Coffee Strengthens Your DNA
Free radicals also cause damage to DNA, causing DNA strands to break. In turn, these broken strands can lead to atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Fortunately, drinking coffee reduces oxidative stress and strengthens DNA integrity.
