4 Steps to Kindness! Monthly Motivation includes printable
Kindness is a gift that everyone can afford to give.
~Unknown
Kindness isn’t a new topic here on the blog. In previous posts, I’ve discussed the benefits of kindness, how kindness breeds success, and offered ways to share kindness with others. While I’ve covered the topic before I do think it’s worth revisiting, so for this month’s motivation, let’s look at four simple steps we can take to create and share kindness.
Listen
Many of us have a hard time actively listening. During a conversation, two people take turns saying what’s on their mind, and it’s not really a two-way dialogue. If you want to to help someone, the best thing you can do is really listen. A person’s body language, tone of voice and facial expressions, as well as their words, will help you understand how they’re feeling and what they might need from you. Try not to react or second-guess. Just observe and tune in. By truly listening, you can give them the gift of being heard.
Empathize
When you empathize, you put yourself in another person’s shoes. You feel their pain, hurt, or confusion, but don’t judge, criticize, or rush to advise. You just hold space and acknowledge where they are right now.
Be compassionate
Compassion is fundamental to kindness. While it’s important to empathize with another’s feelings, compassion compels us to ease someone’s pain through positive action. Think of compassion as next-level empathy in action.
Be generous
Generosity is a key element of kindness. Give someone a smile. Let someone go in front of you. Pay for someone’s soda. Volunteer your time or skills. Whether you share your money, your time, a listening ear, or other practical help, your generous kindness will make a difference.
Simple Steps to Kindness
In this stressful, modern world it’s not always easy to make kindness a top priority. Moreover, no one is perfect. If you’re having a bad day or feeling stressed out, you may only be able to acknowledge your limitations, and resolve to be more kind. But you have the power to create kindness, so train yourself to find the good in people and situations, and do your best to act with sincerity and kindness. Be as kind as you can, whenever you can. I think you’ll find your world will be a happier place.
Along with these steps for kindness, I’ve created a pretty new printable. I hope it helps you remember that, in a world where you can be anything, you can be kind!
