3 ways coffee can help with weight loss

Coffee can be good for you! In the first post of my three-part series, I talked about why coffee is good for you.  In my second post, I covered some surprising health benefits to be gained from your daily cup of joe. While researching these articles I found some pointers about how to use coffee for weight loss. Discovering that coffee may help with weight loss was interesting to me so, with a few caveats, here’s what I learned:

Coffee for Weight Loss

Coffee with no exercise or proper diet is just a morning drink to wake you up. Obviously, you still need to work to achieve your goals. Too much caffeine can cause insomnia, as well as jitters and anxiety. Portion control is important to reap the benefits of coffee without its negative effects. Additionally, not all coffees are created equal. In fact, many coffee drinks (looking at you frappes) barely have any coffee in them. They’re mostly sugar, milk and artificial flavorings. You can’t reap the benefits if you choose the most decadent option.

That being said, coffee can still offer benefits to make the process of weight loss easier.

Have a craving? Try Sipping Coffee First

We often eat not because we’re hungry but because we want something to nibble on. Instead of indulging, drink a cup of coffee. One of coffee’s benefits is its ability to satiate a person’s cravings.

Sip Before a Workout

After a long day, it can sometimes be difficult to get motivated to work out. Rather than exercise, you just want to rest. While it’s not a good idea to drink coffee before going to bed, a cup of coffee before a workout can give you the needed boost for you to get through your routine.

Drink Your Antioxidants

Coffee contains the antioxidant chlorogenic acid, which the body needs to absorb glucose. When you drink coffee after a meal, the chlorogenic acid in coffee stops the production of glucose. It also decreases the tendency to create fat cells.

Not interested in drinking coffee to get this powerful antioxidant? You can always try a green coffee bean supplement instead. Green coffee beans are basically raw coffee beans that haven’t been roasted. Although the jury is still out, some experts say green coffee beans are more effective in weight loss than roasted beans since raw coffee has a higher amount of chlorogenic acids. The supplement is available in health food stores and online.

It Takes Commitment and Effort

A healthy lifestyle means you are diligent and committed to fitness, but there’s no reason not to try coffee to help with weight loss. Just remember, like everything else in life, moderation is key.
