Best at Every Age! 6 Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips
We all know aging is inevitable. But aging doesn’t have to mean loss of health and diminished strength. Science has made amazing advancements, and we have the opportunity to use the best information available to us to maintain and support a lifestyle of health and vitality. After all, maintaining a rich quality of life is the goal!
In my series, “Best at Every Age!” I’ve talked about how a positive mindset is key to cultivating a youthful outlook, shared information about important vitamins that can help us maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, and explored ways we can slow the aging process. In this post, I want to share effective anti-aging tips for your skin.
It’s never too early
Most people don’t start thinking about anti-aging products until they’ve spotted the typical signs of aging. While it’s never too late to start an anti-aging skin care routine, it’s also never too early. Read on for some tips that I hope will help you improve your skin-care routine as well as enhance your overall wellbeing.
6 Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips
1. Focus On What’s Going In Instead Of On
Skin is an organ just like the heart and needs the right nutrients to gain nourishment, so diet is just as important as skin cream. Sugar and processed foods are incredibly hard on your system, so avoid eating refined, packaged foods and added sugar. Vitamin D supplements are a must, and pack your diet with Omega 3 Fatty Acids (as well as Omega 6). Also drink plenty of water. Skin must be hydrated to stay supple.
2. Limit Your Exposure To The Sun
There is nothing worse for aging your skin than exposure to UV rays. Sun affects skin’s elastin content and contributes to collagen loss, causing drooping, a loss of jawline, and development of wrinkles. It can also discolor and roughen skin’s texture. Of course, it’s the main reason for skin cancer, too. Staying out of the sun completely is not realistic, so it’s important to avoid direct exposure when possible. When you are in the sun, nothing is more important than sunscreen. Apply sunscreen to every part of you that is visible to the sun or could be if your clothing moves. Always choose a sunblock that is SPF30 or higher. You can also use makeups that have built-in UV protection. Protect yourself by choosing the shade, and avoiding exercising outdoors at the height of the sun’s heat.
3. Retinoid Cream
Skin creams containing retinoids are the most effective topical creams. Retinoids boost collagen production as well as unclog pores and stimulate the blood vessels. Consistent use will give you smoother, healthier skin, reduce oil production and relieve acne. If an over the counter product isn’t strong enough, speak to your doctor about a prescription strength option and make sure to follow the directions exactly. Also, it’s important to use a moisturizer over the top of the retinoid cream.
4. Your Skincare Routine
You don’t need to spend a fortune to have an effective skincare routine. There’s no need to complicate the process, just do the right things. As noted above sun protection is vital, as is removing your makeup, washing your face, applying a retinoid cream and moisturizer, and doing it consistently. You may also want to change your pillowcase more often than your sheets, since a clean pillow will help prevent breakouts.
5. Cosmetics & Procedures
Everyone has a different skin type and will react better to certain products and procedures. If you’re not sure, speak to a dermatologist about what products are right for your skin type, and ask what procedures might work to turn back the clock and provide anti-aging benefits for your skin. Some helpful procedures are various non-surgical skin tightening treatments, chemical peels, exfoliating procedures, micro needling, laser skin resurfacing and more.
6. Avoid Allergens
It might smell good, but your product could also be causing serious harm to your skin. A lot of the fragrances added to products can actually age your skin! So, be careful what you choose to put on your face. Read directions and avoid potential allergens or products you’ve previously reacted to.
We can make positive changes
We’ve all wished for better looking skin at some point in our lives. While there are many factors outside our control, there are aspects of aging that we can definitely influence. Much of how our skin ages is dependent on lifestyle and environmental factors. It’s never too late to make positive changes, and be our best at every age!
